herbal garden in the Super Textile

Super Textile does not only dedicate to the environmental protection but also work on the landscape beautification.  In the Super Textile green garden, there are lot of plants, including many kinds of vanilla, which give deep impression to the visitors of domestic and abroad.  We are award the National Sustainable World Award this year. One of the Judging Panel of this award is from the members of the Taiwan Society of Wilderness, who is quite impressed on this vanilla district; he thought we made more efforts in the landscape beautification than the other companies did.  In this Vanilla area, there are Taiwan sweet cinnamon vanilla, Jamaica mint, rosemary ... and so on.

For our staff information, we provide the data of each plant with a billboard. It needs to be specially written down; the billboard of the iron stand is our colleagues’ fine masterpiece. They collected the wasted knitting machine spare parts and re-assembly the iron stand and board to make the billboard.

With respect for the Nature and improve the environment

The green wall in the Super Textile plant
When you visit the Super Textile plant, you will come to a corner of a wall of green plants, where always draws the visitors’ attention.  The green wall is a part of the agriculture garden in the Super Textile plant.  The tubes on the wall as the photo showed, replace the plastic pots generally used.  The plastic pipe is made out of recycled plastic bags; the raw material from plastic bags is our achievement on the recycling jobs. Inside the tubes are leaves, kitchen waste, soil, and waste cloth to provide the plant with nutrients. Super Textile staffs made an ingenious design on the plant wall: to give a little tilt on each tube, you can let all the plants to obtain the water, only you irrigate on the top, will the water flow from the top pipe down to the bottom one.

Super Textile's efforts in environmental protection can be said to spare no effort spare no pains; we fully re-use the recycled materials on the facilities around us. Our endeavor not only reduces the waste of impact on the Nature, but also brings the advantage to the environment.

Sharing Green idea with publics

Taiwan Plastic Association visit Super Textile
on 23th. Dec. 2010
Super Textile received a delegation of 131 members of Taiwan plastic Association on 23th Dec. 2010.  We shared our efforts on the environment protection, especially on the plastic, i.e. the textile products made out of the recycled plastic bottles, the bottle tops made into the pallets.

We hope that through this visit, there will be more plastics industries learn the effort Super Textile has done, so that we will arouse more plastics industries to devote themselves in the pet recycling.  Once there are more people work on the recycling jobs, the so called of eternally non-corrupted plastic products would not be junk on the ground, it can be turned into reusable City Mine.

Super Textile was honor to be invited to join the Taiwan and Japan design seminar held in Sung Shan tobacco area on 13th Dec.  The seminar hosted by Universal Design Mr. Satoshi Nakagawa, with the OMOIYARI (Meaning: Design beneficence) concept, Japan TOYOTA Design Center GM. Mr. Tomio Yamazaki and YANMAR Mr. Yasunobu Sano give brief analysis in a whole view point on the Japanese design. The seminar also presents the concrete practical results of Japanese design in consideration of the human, social situation and ecological environment.  Super Textile and Rooster Lighting were the sponsors, invited in the seminar. The two Taiwan local enterprises share their experiences with the attendants regarding the concept of “Disaster design” and “Design for life survival”.  Super Textile also presented their products of Polar Bear, Blanket, Eco-Bag, in the seminar, which of the raw material are out of recycled pet bottle.

It’s over ten years ago, Super Textile with the concern of the environment and our life, started the research and development of the recycle pet bottle. We make garments, blanket for disaster relief and tent out of recycled pet bottles.  Super Textile arise a concept of “City Mine” in the seminar, which aims to encourage more people to devote themselves in the resources recycling.  If there are more and more people doing the jobs everywhere, Super Textile will integrate all the effort of everybody done our mother land will be benefited from our dedication.

Zero waste

The wiper made out of the waste fabric
were Super Textile' effort on the zero waste
To decrease the industry waste in our daily production is one of our routine tasks. In the 4th floor of Super Textile factory, here is the cutting and sewing department, the members are busy with their jobs. You will see there are some waste fabric on the ground.  The waste fabric sent to the dumping yard, it will cause the environment pollution, and our colleagues think it’s so wasteful.  So we are thinking how to reduce the waste and reuse the waste fabric we produce.
After brain storming from our colleagues, we give rebirth to the waste fabrics, to reuse them by making them as scarf, wiping fabric, which would be a gift given to our customer and for our colleague cleaning.  The wiping fabric as the photo shown is about 20 g, it can absorb water over 5 times of its weight. The effort we have done is aimed to become a zero waste factory.

Super Textile devoted the R&D of recycle pet early in 1997. Over one decade dedication, our achievement is affirmed, which also enables us be one of the environmental heroes 2010. The <Global Views Monthly> with Yahoo as the host organization, review all 121 candidates recommended by public; after the editorial department audit and investigation and with expert’s opinions, 15 heroes were selected for the second session of the Taiwan Environment heroes.  UMC, 7-Eleven, Yulon Motor – LUXGEN are the heroes of this year. Last year, the first 15 heroes were selected among 165 candidates, Tzu Chi foundation – Master Cheng Yen, Jian You Chin –the former minister of Environmental Protection Administration, Taiwan, Philip - Taiwan are the heroes.

Our efforts enable the recycled pet bottle to be made into fabric, instead of being derived directly from petroleum byproducts, the fabric fiber are extracted from recycled PET bottles. The bottle top, after our research and development for years, can be collected, cleaned, and made into the pallet.  Recycled bottle became to team player shirt, it gets renowned in the World Cup 2010. There are nine of the 32 teams in the World Cup were knitted out in fabric made from Taiwanese recycled bottles.  A pallet of 120 cm x 120 cm is made out of 7,300 bottle tops.

Super Textile gives rebirth to the pet bottle which has been in a much more environmentally friendly way used.

National Sustainable Development Awards 2010

Left: The Executive Yuan, Premier Wu Den yih; Right: Super Textile, President Alex Lo

The natural resources in the world have been consumed in an amazing speed after the Industry revolution.  The development of industrial oil was about 100 years ago, as to the stock and the exploitation of oil now; it would be probably used up in 40 years.

Super textile as a small-and-medium-size enterprise, lack of human and material resources, we are eager to think about what we can do for the Earth.

The PET bottle is the oil floating to the surface on the ground, if we can make good use of it; there will be chance to extend the oil duration in the world. Our efforts are to be sure to earn more time to find new energy alternatives to the oil for our generation in the future.

Therefore, Super Textile had been devoting to the development and research of the recycled PET fabric.  It can be said it takes our effort one decade to cast a sword.

Our effort on the pet bottle recycling has been approved; we are honored to obtain the 1st TUV Rheinland RECYCLED SYSTEM/MATERIAL CERTIFICATION in the world in July 2010. Our endeavor also gains the approval of the Executive Yuan's National Sustainable Awards on 7th Dec. 2010.  Another honor is the Environmental Hero Award to be awarded by <GLOBAL VIEWS MONTHLY> on 8th Dec., 2010.  Super Textile with the brand name of Supertex RPET will provide more in-depth and wide range of applications and services.

Rainwater recycling

We all know that oil reserves will be depleted in about 40 years, but we may not know that the Earth's fresh water resource will face great problems in 60 years. Although the amount of total annual rainfall in Taiwan has not changed much, it’s getting difficult to retain rainwater on the ground due to: the rain is usually heavy and fast, rain distribution is getting uneven, urbanization is making more trees got cut down. Supertextile would like to put in some effort for world’s fresh water depletion issue despite our small size. Therefore, we have built two rainwater tanks, one 63 tons and the other 126 tons, for our #1 and #2 factories, collecting rainwater for regular use of toilets, garden irrigation, surrounding lawn watering, environment cleaning, and rooftop sprinkling system for cooling purpose in the summer time.

Ecological pool

The vacant lot on the left side of the factory building used to be a lawn. After an EPA officer visited the lot and suggested it to be a wetland, it is now converted to an eco-pool. With Alocasia, water lotus and other native species of Taiwan, the eco-pool has become a self-contained ecosystem, within which dragonflies and butterflies slide, and frogs and fish swim freely. The eco-pool’s water is the rainwater collecting from the rooftop, buffering through a water piggy bank, slowly flows into the eco-pool. The principle of connecting pipe is applied, so when eco-pool’s water is filled, the water will flow to another water tank which has the same volume as the eco-pool.

Social responsibility

SuperTextile cooperates with Taoyuan County Farmers Association in distribution and application of scrap clothes and factory arisings. The company also dispatches aids to help their suppliers in typhoon relieving activities, and makes time and effort to improve the landscaping design for the neighboring manufacturers. SuperTextile employees have denoted their two-day pay to the victims of september 21st earthquake and August  8th typhoon-flooding. SuperTextile has helped ICDF of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs organizing several international seminars for APO members, including Textile Council of Hong Kong Limited, China Association of renewable resources, and many other domestic and foreign governmental institutes. The company also receives student group visits, from college students, such as Culture University, Oriental Institute of Technology, and Vanung University, to kindergarten kids, because we love to share our knowledge and what we do.

Solar energy

Currently there are two solar powered road lights, on each side of our factory entrance, for night time lighting. They automatically sense, switch on when the light-level is low in night times, and switch off during the day.

Recycled bottles to clothes

Producing one kilo of general cotton shirts will consume 130 – 150kgs of water. Using recycled bottles as material to produce the same color of clothes, such as using green bottles to produce green shirts, will greatly reduce water consumption for 60-80%, since there is no dyeing process involved. In addition, the wash and sun durability of these clothes can achieve level 4 and above.

Incinerator

Incinerator: Although SuperTextile would like to re-utilize all the waste resources, there are still some that are difficult to be reused, such as: confidential documents, arisings, and tree branches, etc., which will have to go to an incinerator. However, the heat energy produced from the incineration process can heat up 4 tons of water which should be applied to kitchen hot washing-water in the future. The ashes will go to the land.

Wind power

The biggest cause to climate change is energy consumption. The energy is mainly from oil, coal, and nuclear. These are the limited resources of the earth. Nuclear energy also has safety concern, so the most environmentally friendly energy is wind power and solar energy. Ten years ago, SuperTextile has started putting effort in the testing and practical application of wind power. We have applied wind power on eight lighting sets, 1000 watts, for our hallways. One turbine blade was once damaged by typhoon, and we made a purchase for a new replacement blade. According to our calculation, it will take another 90 years for the produced electricity to cover the cost of these wind power instrument. Only a fool will do such a thing, but in SuperTextile, we have our beliefs and persistence.

Recycled plant tubes

According to the data from EPA, the average plastic bag used in Taiwan annually is 19 billion; among these, only 7% is recycled, and the rest 93% is buried in the garbage, gutter…and everywhere, causing a big environmental problem. There is no country in the world so far is dealing with the plastic bag recycling specifically, due to the cost-effective issue; only Taiwan is recycling plastic bags. SuperTextile has been thinking how to fully utilize these resources; so far we have successfully made these resources into plastic tubes that can be applied to replacing paper tubes, and the plant retaining walls for landscape decoration.

Recycled caps to pallets

People have been using recycled bottles for textile material for more than 10 years, but caps and labels have not yet been used by any one. In the past, labels were made from PVC. After government has imposed the use of PET, now labels are made from PET, the same material as bottles’; therefore, label’s pollution issue has been solved. However, cap’s pollution issue still exists. In order to implement the cradle-to-cradle belief of zero pollution and zero waste, SuperTextile has devoted two years researching and developing a way to re-utilize these recycled caps. SuperTextile believes that their mission is to research and develop products that are closely related to people’s lives, thus to make contribution to humankind by improving their lives. There are four basic human needs: food, clothing, shelter and transportation, so what we do in SuperTextile is: converting bottles to clothing materials and caps to transportation pallets. Compared to traditional wooden pallets, Cap-made pallets are light, stackable thus space-saving, more durable and without pest problems. Many advanced countries in Europe and America have banned the use of wooden pallets due to pest problems.
